With government officials and high court judges buying more than one housing property under the government schemes carried out by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and other government agencies, it is difficult for the common man to buy these houses. The state government has taken a decision to deter this further after the Bombay High Court’s verdict.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday said that the government and judiciary officials shall not be allocated any property under any government scheme if they own at least one property in the city or state. Earlier, the officials bought the house in the name of family and sold them after some time.

This comes after a bench led by Justice B R Gavai heard the petition filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar which questioned the Maharashtra government’s decision to build domiciles for the judges in Mumbai’s Oshiwara.

During the previous hearing of the petition, the Bombay High Court questioned that what is the need for a second house under the government schemes? The court has also stated that the official’s demand for another house in Navi Mumbai should be stopped.

Earlier, the high court directed Advocated General Ashutosh Kumbhkoni to take this issue with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and has asked the state government to explain the same.
