The Bombay High Court has strongly criticised the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government for failing to curb illegal hawking near railway stations in Mumbai.
Hearing a petition related to the situation in Goregaon, the court expressed concern over the unchecked spread of unauthorised hawkers occupying footpaths and public spaces. It observed that despite repeated complaints, authorities have not taken effective action to resolve the issue.
The petition, filed by local traders, highlighted that illegal hawkers are impacting businesses and posing safety risks to pedestrians. The court also took note of incidents where people faced aggressive behavior after objecting to encroachments.
Coming down heavily on the authorities, the court stated that their inaction has worsened the situation and stressed the need for strict enforcement of existing regulations. It directed officials to outline concrete steps to address the problem and ensure compliance with previous court orders.
