Borivali railway station is now being developed as a smart station. Western Railway (WR) is installing the city's largest electronic interlocking (EI) signaling system here.

This new system will make the movement of local trains smoother. It will be easier to maintain the schedule and control the crowds during peak hours.

Work is currently underway on constructing the fifth and sixth lines between Kandivali and Borivali by Western Railway. As part of this project, the signaling system at Borivali railway station is being completely modernized.

Until now, the old relay-based signaling system, which had been in operation for decades, was used for local train traffic. Now, it has been replaced with a state-of-the-art electronic interlocking system.

Under this system, a total of 381 railway tracks have been brought under a single system. As many as 56 signals are being managed digitally.

For safe traffic, 90 track points, or switches, have been placed under electronic control.

Additionally, 123 track circuits have been installed to monitor the position of trains, and all seven lines have been connected to a single control system.

A state-of-the-art signaling control room has been set up at Borivali railway station for this purpose. This room features two 65-inch 8K digital screens, which display the movement of trains in real-time.

This will enable controllers to make faster and more informed decisions during technical malfunctions, emergencies, or peak hours.

By early 2026, this new signaling system at Borivali will be fully operational, becoming the largest and most advanced system in the Mumbai suburban railway network.
