Byculla zoo fighting for survival

SHARES

Byculla - It seems that the city's only garden and zoo 'Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Garden' (Byculla Zoo) is feared to be closed as the Central Zoo Authority of India has issued a notice to the Byculla zoo administration. The Central Authority had directed the BMC to improve the situation of Byculla Zoo till December. The MCGM had prepared a redevelopment plan worth Rs 150 crore but no improvement can be seen at this zoo. Even cleaning machines given by the civic body are biting the dust and almost all the cages are without animals. Many animals are kept in a single place. The visitors can be seen openly smokingly in the banned area of this garden and zoo. Overall, the condition of this historical Byculla zoo is getting worse day by day. If urgent steps are not taken to improve the situation here, it may lose its sheen and will linger only in the memories of people.

However, when contacted by Mumbai Live, Dy. Superitendant of the Zoo Dr. Sanjay Tripathi said that the notice sent by Central Zoo Authority is not a big deal and is just a part of the routine procedure.
