The Government of India has announced a 27 per cent reservation for OBC (Other Backward Class) and a 10 per cent reservation for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) towards undergraduate and postgraduate medical/dental courses including MBBS, MD, MS, Diploma, BDS, and MDS under the All India Quota (AIQ). The quota is applicable to the academic year 2021-22.

Around 1,500 OBC and 550 EWS students in MBBS, along with 2,500 OBC and 1,000 EWS students in postgraduate courses will benefit from the move.

The decision was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who chaired a meeting on July 26 with the relevant ministries, directing them to come up with a solution.

It’s worth noting that there was no reservation under the AIQ scheme until 2007. That year, the Supreme Court brought reservations of 15 per cent for scheduled caste (SC) and 7.5 per cent for students belonging to the scheduled tribe (ST) category. Taking these factors into account, this is being deemed a historic move by the Government of India.

“The present government is committed to providing due reservation both to the backward category as well as the EWS category. The Union government has now taken a historic decision to provide for 27% reservation for OBCs and 10% reservation for EWS in the AIQ Scheme. The OBC students from across the country shall now be able to take benefit of this reservation in AIQ Scheme to compete for seats in any State. Being a Central Scheme, the Central List of OBCs shall be used for this reservation,” the government said in a release.
