According to reports, the state government has informed that the Maratha community can avail benefits under 10 per cent EWS (economically weaker sections) quota in government jobs and education.

Earlier on May 5, the apex court denied the Maharashtra State Government's decision to grant reservation to the Maratha community in state education and jobs, exceeding the 50 per cent limit. The Supreme Court further stated that there was no valid reason for the state government to breach 50 per cent reservation while granting reservation to the Maratha community.

Moreover, the five-judge constitutional bench struck down the state law made in 2018 while pronouncing its judgment on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the legislation that granted reservation to the Maratha community.

On the other hand, earlier on May 18, the chairman of Cabinet Sub-Committee on Maratha Reservation Ashok Chavan held a meeting to discuss the state government’s future course of action.

Furthermore, the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Maratha Reservation reviewed the current status of the recruitment process after the Supreme Court verdict along with various decisions taken by the state government for the Maratha community.

The meeting was reportedly held at Sahyadri Government Guest House under the chairmanship of the Public Works Minister and Chairman of the sub-committee Ashok Chavan. Moreover, members of the sub-committee and Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde were present.
