Central Railway’s Mumbai Division Ticket Checking Staff has shattered previous records by registering Ticket Checking earnings for the month of April 2026.

This remarkable feat sets a new all-time high for monthly ticket checking earnings, surpassing the previous record of INR 14.50 crores registered in May 2023. 

Significant increase in Ticket checking earnings:

During April 2026, Mumbai Division’s Ticket checking teams have detected and penalised 2.27 lakh cases of irregular travel in Mail & Express trains and Suburban trains including AC locals as against 1.45 lakh cases in April 2025 registering an increase of 56%.

An amount of INR 16.13 crores was recovered as penalty during April 2026 as against INR 6.07 crores recovered as penalty in April 2025 registering a significant increase of 166%.

This sharp rise reflects intensified enforcement efforts and a significant increase in the number of irregular travel cases detected.

In April 2026, ticket-checking teams identified approximately 2.27 lakh instances of ticketless or improper travel across Mail, Express, and suburban services, including AC local trains in Mumbai. This marks a 56% jump compared to 1.45 lakh cases recorded in April 2025.

Cases in Second class coaches & recovery of penalty:

Frequent ticket checking drives in Mail & Express trains and Suburban trains especially in second class coaches have proved effective with detection of 1.58 lakh cases in April-2026 against 1.05 lakh cases in April-2025 registering an increase of 50%.

An amount of Rs.13.06 crores as penalty was recovered as penalty in April-2026 against Rs.5.03 crores in April-2025 registering a significant increase of 160%.

AC locals:

Special ticket checking drives in AC locals conducted during April-2026, to curb cases of irregular travelling and ensure comfort of bonafide passengers have yielded encouraging results.

A total of 12,698 cases were detected in AC locals in April-2026 against 10,420 cases in April-2025 with increase of 22%. 

An amount of Rs.39.66 lakh were recovered as penalty against Rs.34.39 lakh with increase of 15%. 

Details of Cases of irregular travel in other classes and cases of unbooked luggage & Penalty amount recovered during April 2026 is as follows:

From First class coaches  - 11,877 cases  & Rs.3.79 crores as penalty

From Difference of fares in Mail & Express trains  - 35,785 cases  & Rs.2.20 crores  as penalty

From Unbooked Luggage  - 8,723 cases  & Rs.9.95 lakh as penalty.

Central Railway’s Mumbai division conducts frequent special ticket checking drives in Mail & Express trains and Suburban trains –both AC locals & Non-AC locals and at stations to curb cases of irregular travelling and ensure the safety and comfort of bonafide passengers. These special checks not o­nly help detect & penalise passengers travelling with irregular tickets, but also makes a huge impact in deterring others from travelling ticketless.

Central Railway appeals to passengers to travel with dignity and responsibility by purchasing proper and valid tickets to avoid inconvenience and penalties. The Railway reiterates its zero-tolerance policy towards ticketless travel and remains committed to ensuring that passengers enjoy a comfortable and dignified journey.
