According to reports, Central Railways has fined more than 90,000 commuters for travelling ticketless and without proper documentation.
Moreover, INR 3.8 crores were recovered as a fine from the commuters in July. In addition, an increase in the number of ticketless commuters from June was witnessed. In June, 62,000 passengers were fined, and INR 2.6 crores were recovered from them.
Amidst the pandemic, the Mumbai locals are currently commuting passengers working in essential services and citizens who are travelling for medical emergencies. Meanwhile, in the months between April and July, 304,000 passengers travelling without tickets were fined by the Central Railway and INR 15.9 crores was recovered as a fine.
The suburban railway system was earlier halted for the general public for the second time on April 15.
On the other hand, over the last few months, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed strict guidelines, with an aim to maintain cleanliness in the city of Mumbai. Officials informed that the ones who are caught spitting in the city will have to pay a fine, and over the last 10 months, the marshals assigned for the job of checking the same, have collected INR 33 lakh as fines from people violating this rule in public.
Information regarding the same was published in the Indian Express. The report stated that a total of 16,659 citizens were caught for the same and a fine of INR 200 to INR 1200 was collected for not following the directives.
