Taking cognizance of the complaints received against fake clean-up marshals, on Wednesday, January 5, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) appealed to the citizens to check if the fine collector is wearing the correct uniform before paying the penalty, reports stated.

Apart from this, it also asked the citizens to check the serial number of the concerned department or ward printed on the uniform. On Wednesday, the civic authority also proclaimed a toll-free number - 1800221916 - for citizens to voice their complaints against the clean-up marshals, highlighted accounts.

The BMC's clean-up marshals have been appointed to fine those moving without face masks as well as spitting in public places in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they have been surrounded by controversy for allegedly harassing citizens. On social media, several videos of arguments between the marshals and people over donning the masks have gone viral.

According to the civic body's rule, clean-up marshals not only have to be in uniforms but also show their identity cards to people when recovering fines. They are then supposed to give a receipt that mentions the amount collected, serial number and the ward's name printed.

Many pretend to be these clean-up marshals and without wearing uniforms fine people. A fine of INR 200 each is charged by the BMC if one is found spitting and without masks in a public place.
