Omicron Scare: Maharashtra Reports 144 New Cases, 100 From Mumbai

On Wednesday, January 5, Maharashtra reported 26,538 new COVID-19 cases and eight fatalities owing to the virus. The number of recoveries stands at 5,331 and the active cases are at 87,505. With this, cases are up by 44 per cent, state reports. To date, the state has reported 67,57,032 cases and has witnessed 65,24,247 recoveries. In the state, 1,41,581 people have lost lives to coronavirus so far. 

Apart from this, the state on Wednesday also reported 144 new cases of the highly transmissible Omicron variant. From these, 100 were reported in Mumbai. With these updates in numbers, 797 patients have been infected by the new variant so far in the state. 

In Mumbai, so far 508 cases of Omicron have been reported. These entail 26 out of state patients and 9 foreign nationals. Similarly, one patient each is from Raigad, Palghar, Jalgaon, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad. Seven are from Thane and four are from Kolhapur. In Maharashtra, 330 of the Omicron cases have recovered so far. 

Moreover, on Wednesday in a major concern, Mumbai witnessed the highest single-day rise since the outbreak of the pandemic. The city recorded 15,166 new cases with three related deaths in the last 24 hours. Mumbai saw a 39 per cent jump in daily cases over Tuesday. Of the new cases, 87 per cent are asymptomatic.
