Mumbai reports more than 15,000 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours

In a major concern, Mumbai on Wednesday, January 5, saw highest single day rise since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Today, the city recorded 15,166 new cases with three related deaths in the last 24 hours. Mumbai saw 39 per cent jump in daily cases over yesterday with reporting 10,860 cases on Tuesday, January 4.

Of the new cases, 87 per cent are asymptomatic. Nearly, 1,218 COVID-19 patients were hospitalised today in the metropolis and 80 of them are on oxygen support.

During the second wave, Mumbai had seen 11,163 cases in a day on April 4, 2021. In addition, amidst emergence of the Omicron variant, on Tuesday, January 4, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proclaimed updated guidelines for international passengers arriving at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

Besides, Mumbai has already brought in curbs in an attempt to check the rise in cases. Beaches, open grounds, sea faces, promenades, parks, and other public places have been made off-limits to people in the city between 5 pm and 5 am till January 15

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Tuesday stated that if the daily cases in Mumbai cross 20,000, the civic authority could consider imposing further restrictions.

Moreover, earlier in the day, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant stated that taking into consideration the rise in COVID-19 cases, the Maharashtra government has decided to discontinue physical classes in colleges and universities till February 15.

Meanwhile, amid rising cases, on Monday, January 3, the BMC in Mumbai had stated that schools in Mumbai for grades 1-9 and 11 will remain shut till January 31.
