On Tuesday, January 4, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar was quoted by news agency ANI elaborating on how the authorities will need to impose a lockdown in Mumbai if the daily COVID-19 cases cross the 20,000-threshold.

Pednekar remarked, "We will have to impose lockdown in Mumbai if daily COVID cases cross the 20,000-mark". According to reports, she elaborated on how she isn't saying so but based on government rules if daily cases cross 20,000 then a lockdown may be needed. She, however, believes that citizens shouldn't let such a time arise with the fight against coronavirus still ongoing.

Pednekar added that while nobody wants a lockdown, everyone must follow COVID-19 appropriate behaviour to ensure that a lockdown doesn't need to be implemented. She drew contrast to the second wave and elucidated that the locals have the power to stop the third wave as well.

Based on narratives, she claimed that the BMC is prepared to handle the rapid surge in cases by increasing COVID-19 testing, appealing to all to wear face masks and asking even those bed-ridden to get vaccinated. She also believes that the authorities cannot be behind every individual to follow COVID-19 rules. Instead, she thinks that people themselves should follow the protocols to stop the virus from spreading so the number of cases can be controlled.

Previously, Maharashtra Health Minister, Rajesh Tope had ruled out the possibility of a lockdown while adding that there hasn't been any discussion on a lockdown but mentioned the need for additional restrictions.

Tope had stated that the government is making a strategy to increase vaccination. He highlighted that whilst restrictions had been imposed, restaurants, theatres and educational establishments weren't touched by the government.
