With Mumbai reporting over 10,000 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, January 4, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Tuesday stated that if the daily cases in Mumbai cross 20,000, the civic authority could consider imposing further restrictions, highlighted reports.

According to accounts, in an interview with a TV channel, Chahal remarked that during the meeting with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on December 30, the consensus was to keep the benchmark for putting in force restrictions or a strict sort of a semi-lockdown should be hospital bed availability, oxygen requirement and vacancy, instead of positivity.

Chahal added that in the past few days when cases in Mumbai rose from 3,000 to 8,000 daily, there hasn’t been any stress on oxygenated beds and ICU beds. According to him, the strategy will be reviewed weekly.

Based on reports, he remarked that while the civic body was being vigilant towards passengers from “at-risk” countries, those from “non-risk” countries could also be carriers of the Omicron variant. He also highlighted that Mumbai was at the beginning of the third wave of coronavirus.

Chahal was confident that even if Mumbai reports 20,000 cases a day, the city will not cross over 12,000 occupied beds since the Omicron variant has a five to seven day cycle. Previously, on Tuesday, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar had stated that if the daily COVID-19 cases in Mumbai cross the 20,000-threshold, a lockdown will be imposed in accordance with the Central government’s rules.
