The CIDCO has appointed a joint venture of RITES Limited and Creative Group LLP to conduct a techno-commercial feasibility study for a proposed third runway at Navi Mumbai International Airport. The study is expected to be completed within six months.

A review meeting was held on April 15, 2026, under the chairmanship of Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO, to discuss key aspects of the study. Senior officials from CIDCO, RITES, and Creative Group LLP were present.

CIDCO stated that the expansion plan is aimed at addressing the rapidly growing air traffic demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The proposed third runway is expected to enhance airport capacity and operational efficiency, strengthening NMIA’s role as a major aviation hub.

NMIA, the second international airport serving the region alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, is being developed as one of India’s largest greenfield airports. It is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers annually and 3.2 million tonnes of cargo upon full completion.

Spread over around 1,160 hectares, the airport will feature two parallel runways and four terminals, to be developed in phases. With air traffic demand in the region projected to rise significantly in the coming decades, authorities are exploring expansion options to meet future needs.

The feasibility study will assess the technical, operational, environmental, and financial viability of adding a third runway, as part of long-term planning to support the region’s growing aviation demand.
