CIDCO’s recent crackdown on illegal constructions in Navi Mumbai has angered many residents and builders. Notices have been issued to 1,930 individuals involved in unauthorised structures, including both property owners and tenants. This move has come as a surprise to many, especially those who had hoped for relief through a Supreme Court decision.

CIDCO has cited the Supreme Court’s directions as the basis for this action, though officials have refrained from offering specific comments. Residents fear that this sudden enforcement will cause hardship for those who built homes out of necessity. Many remain uncertain about whether their structures will be regularised or demolished.

For the past 30 years, CIDCO largely ignored illegal construction on its lands, allowing individuals to build and rent properties without much interference. However, since Suresh Mengade took charge of the Vigilance Department and later the Construction Control Department, CIDCO has demolished over 300 illegal structures and reclaimed over 2 lakh square meters of land.

Following a detailed survey by the Building Control Department, 407 buildings were identified as illegal. Of these, 377 received hearing notices, and 308 property owners have already presented their cases to CIDCO.

CIDCO officials say the survey and notice process will continue until the end of August. Efforts to get an official statement from CIDCO’s public relations department were unsuccessful, though a senior source confirmed the notice issuance.
