The Maharashtra government on Monday, January 27, approved the construction of Mumbai Metro Line 8 (Gold Line), connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The urban development department formalised this decision through a government resolution (GR).

According to the GR, most of the Metro corridor will pass through Navi Mumbai. Therefore, CIDCO the agency developing NMIA, is tasked with preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for government approval. CIDCO will collaborate with stakeholders and follow established procedures to secure timely approvals.

The Metro project is being undertaken by CIDCO (Navi Mumbai section) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) (Mumbai section).

The 35-km long route is expected to serve 9 lakh passengers daily, with the overall cost of the project estimated at around Rs 15,000 crore.

While the MMRDA was preparing to implement the tender process for the project, the High-Powered Committee headed by the Chief Secretary in its May 2024 meeting decided that since most of the route passes through Navi Mumbai, CIDCO should prepare the detailed report of the project.

The project seeks to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, reduce travel time, and accommodate the growing passenger demand at both airports. This distance of about 40 kilometers can be covered in about 30 minutes by metro.
