After being delayed, the construction work of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s memorial began on Wednesday. A senior Public Works Department (PWD) official told ‘Mumbai Live’ that the construction of the Shivaji memorial began with the reclamation of land in the Arabian sea and the same will be completed in the next six months. 

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) construction company has been given the contract for the first phase of the construction with a budget of ₹3,826 crore. As per the contract, the reclamation process was supposed to start six months ago. 

For the reclamation process, cement blocks have been prepared and kept in the casting yard which will be used for land reclamation, the PWD official informed, adding that the construction work of the memorial is expected to get over in three years.

However, Shiv Smarak Samiti president Vinayak Mete wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis mentioning the economic irregularities and errors in the tender issues for the project. In the letter, Mete demanded an inquiry and action against the concerned officials. 

While the Shiv Smarak Samiti President could not be contacted for further details, the PWD official said that the letter dates back to September 15, 2018, and as of now, Mete has been satisfied.
