Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made a surprise visit at the civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel, Mumbai to inquire about the availability of facilities and amenities provided to the patients on Monday night, August 21. He also interacted directly with the patients to know their problems faced during the treatment.

Shinde, who was in central Mumbai to attend a function, toured the hospital in Parel late in the evening.

It is pertinent to note that this visit came days after the deaths of 18 persons took place within a 24-hour period recently at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa in Thane district.

During his visit, Shinde directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials to undertake repair works of six shut wards at the hospital and it should be done on a war footing level. Moreover, he asked senior civic officers to pay attention to this work.

He visited various departments of the hospital and inquired about the arrangements there. KEM is 97-years-old hospital. The Chief Minister also said that there would be no shortage of funds for updating the facilities in this hospital.

Later, Shinde interacted with media representatives. He said that instructions have been given to start work on six wards of the hospital in the next two days.

“It was a surprise visit after I came to know that six wards of KEM Hospital were shut. Once these wards are ready after repairs, they can accommodate 400 to 450 patients. I spoke to patients and their kin and assured them no one will miss out on treatment due to lack of money,” the CM told reporters after the visit.

“I found some facilities and services in the hospital in good condition. Work on the shut wards will begin in two days. I have asked authorities to conceal open wires etc,” the chief minister added.

The Chief Minister also said that instructions have been given to provide quality milk to the patients here.
