After 16 students were admitted to a hospital falling victim to food poisoning in Bhandup, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated the matter and discovered that the contractor did not possess the licence to cook.

Despite this, Sahyadri Vidyamandir Private School gave the contract to Lingeshwar Mahila Mandal. The school and contractor, both have violated food safety standards and are playing with the lives of the students.

After students ate their meal – Khichdi -  provided by the school around 11:00 AM on Thursday, they began to experience difficulties such as stomach ache, nausea and vomiting. Along with 16 students, a teacher was admitted to Agrawal Hospital in Mulund.

Fortunately, the condition of the students and faculty is currently stable. FDA came in for investigation after they received information regarding the same.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Joint Commissioner, Shailesh Adhav, informed Mumbai Live that Lingeshwar Mahila Mandal did not have the licence and the school handed them the contract to cook meals for the students.

The law requires for any food-related business to have a licence approved by the FDA to ensure food safety standards are complied with. However, the Mandal doesn’t have the same and it leads to a question as to why the school handed them the contract.

Strong action will be taken against Lingeshwar Mahila Mandal for not possessing an FDA approved licence and violating the law. It has also been revealed that other provisions of the Food Safety Standards Act have been violated.
