Think Monsoon and think pothole. For several years, potholes have become a cause of great concern for the Mumbaikars. While there are a lot of memes made on this subject matter but it is a matter of great concern as well. Potholes have in the past resulted a lot of accidents, some of which even turned fatal. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been on the recieving end of the criticism for this issue year on year but they have failed to provide a resolution to the issue.

However, this year BMC plans to tackle this issue in a completely new manner all together. The civic body has declared that if potholes are found this year in Mumbai roads, the contractor who has constructed the road, will be held responsible. Alongside, BMC has also indicated that the contractor's deposit will be withheld and his ongoing work will also be put on hold.

The cement concrete roads usually have a guranteed durability period of 5-10 years whereas the asphalt roads are expected to stay put for at least three years. Therefore, the municipal corporation has decided that they will withhold 20 per cent of amount payable to the contractor till the guranteed period is concluded. If there are potholes in the road prior to the completion of the gurantee period, BMC will not pay the amount to the contractor.

On Thursday, BMC had held a Standing Committee Meeting where the pertaining issue of potholes was discussed. After the conversation, Additional Commissioner Vijay Singhal announced that the contractors will be responsible for potholes in roads during the gurantee period.

Alongside, he also said that an inspection will be held for the roads in Mumbai and has ordered filling the potholes in them, if found. Alongside, BMC has decided that the contractor will be responsible for the maintenance of footpaths and sidewalks. In case of detection of potholes, the contractor must inform BMC immediately.

Following the decision, it will be notable to see if the contractors start constructing better roads and gift Mumbai with a pothole-free ride this monsoon.
