Control rooms to be set up in Maharashtra to regulate the supply of Remdesivir

As per reports, these control rooms will help in bridging the demand and supply, thereby curbing the black-marketing of the drug which is necessary for the treatment of critical COVID-19 cases.

Coronavirus cases in the state of Maharashtra are increasing steadily and with an aim to curb the same, the state government, on Saturday, April 10, 2021 has taken steps to ensure smooth supply of Remdesivir injections. 

As per reports, officials will be setting up control rooms across several districts and this will help in illegal marketing of the injections, which are necessary for the treatment of COVID-19 among critical cases. Currently, several instances have come to the fore front where the state had faced issues related to Remdesivir, where the same was being sold at a higher price that normal due to black-marketing. However, with the new decision, the authorities aim to control the same thereby avoiding irrational prescriptions.

A review meeting was held by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, to discuss the matter, and present at the same were other members from the cabinet and government like Amit Deshmukh, Rajesh Tope, Eknath Shinde, Rajendra Shingne among others. Following the directives, Ramaswami N, State's health services commissioner wrote a letter addressed to district collectors in Maharashtra, directing them to act on the same and prepare to set up the control rooms.

On the ther hand, Remdesivir will now be available at a price of INR 1,100 to INR 1,400 based on the guidelines issued by the government. Pharmaceutical companies manufacturing the drug have also been asked to increase the production and reduce the cost to ensure affordability and availability.

FDA has also been asked to keep an check on the control rooms, for which, necessary steps are being taken by the National Health Mission, to ensure adequate supply of Remdesivir. A special mechanism is being planned to make the process smoother and easy keeping the increasing COVID-19 spread in  mind.
