The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination is set to begin from Thursday, April 1, where all people above the age of 45 can get vaccinated, irrespective of the comorbidities.

All eligible people can book an appointment for COVID-19 vaccination via CoWIN - a government portal -- cowin.gov.in. Besides, beneficiaries also have an option of on-site registration after 3 pm.

For the on-site registration, all you need is identity proof, which includes any of the mentioned --- Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passbook, Passport and Ration Card.

Earlier, only Aadhar Card and Voter ID were accepted as identity proof. Now, people can also show their bank passbook, passport, and ration card as identity proof. Those people who have comorbidities need to show a certificate from a medical practitioner which mentions their medical condition.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has appealed to every eligible person to get vaccinated, especially since the decision to extend vaccination to everyone aged above 45 years of age was taken.

Giving clarification on people contracting COVID-19 after taking the vaccine, the health minister said that such cases are extremely rare. Antibodies take two weeks to develop fully after the second dose of the vaccine which provides a window for infection. This takes us to our earlier appeal of strict adherence to COVID Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) regardless of the vaccination exercise.

According to reports, so far, 6.11 crore doses of vaccine have been administered nation-wide since the drive began on January 16 after approval for 'Covishield' and 'Covaxin'.

The expenditure was borne by the government in the first round of vaccination. During the second phase, the central government roped in around 10,000 private hospitals to ramp up the COVID-19 immunisation drive in the country. Those who opt for COVID-19 vaccination in the private clinics will have to pay for their doses, the government had said earlier. Private hospitals functioning as COVID Vaccination Centres (CVCs) may recover a charge subject to a ceiling of INR 250 per person per dose, the Centre added. The vaccination is free at government centres.

India started its first phase of vaccination drive on January 16 for the healthcare workers, and the vaccination drive was later extended for frontline workers from February 2. On March 1, the next phase of vaccination started in which people above the age of 60 were vaccinated.
