According to reports, after Chembur recorded the highest number of fresh COVID-19 cases from high-rises on Monday, February 15, the ward office issued new guidelines in order to direct societies and hawkers to undergo tests for the coronavirus.

The authorities further hinted at the possibility of “imposition of local lockdown measures” to control the occurrence of rising cases and insisted on starting the drive for the elderly in the ward at the earliest. Meanwhile, in a press conference in Aurangabad, the state's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar pointed out that people have started avoiding wear face masks while in public places which could lead to serious consequences.

On the other hand, earlier on Tuesday, February 16, Maharashtra recorded 3,663 people testing positive for the novel coronavirus in the state taking the state's COVID-19 tally to 20,71,306. At present, there are 37,125 active cases in the state. With 2,700 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 19,81,408. Moreover, Mumbai continues to be a major novel coronavirus hotspot with 461 fresh cases clocked in the last 24 hours.

In addition, 1,53,96,444 samples have been tested for the novel coronavirus in labs operational across the state. While 1,82,970 persons are under home quarantine, 1,726 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 positivity rate, recovery rate and fatality rate in Maharashtra stand at 13.45 per cent, 95.66 per cent and 2.49 per cent respectively.
