Mumbai Records Highest Single-Day Spike in Cases on Sep 17

Mumbai on Thursday (September 17) reached an unfortunate landmark as it crossed the highest single-day count for COVID-19 cases as the city saw 2,389 new cases. This beats the previous single-day record set on September 10 when 2,371 cases were reported. Separately, 43 people lost their lives due to COVID-19, taking Mumbai’s coronavirus death toll to 8,320. 

As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mumbai’s coronavirus active case count now stands at 32,849 which is also the city’s highest over a two month period. Meanwhile, with 1,173 people fully recovering from the virus on Thursday, the total recoveries in Mumbai have touched 1,36,739. The city’s recovery rate now stands at 77 per cent as per the authorities.

The average growth rate of the city is at 1.24 per cent whereas the doubling rate is said to be at 55 days. It’s worth noting that some regions in the city have a shorter doubling rate which is concerning to the authorities. 

As for sealed buildings, the BMC mentioned that there are a total of 9,365 currently in its periphery. The civic body seals a building entirely if at least one person from the location tests positive for the coronavirus. Additionally, a total of 590 containment zones have been established in slums across the city.
