On Monday, December 28, Maharashtra recorded 2,498 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,22,048. Currently, there are 57,159 active cases in the state. With 4,501 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 18,14,449.

In the last 24 hours, 50 people have lost their lives and with this, the total number of people that have died in the state owing to the contagious disease has reached 49,305. While 4,52,535 persons are under home quarantine, 3,138 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.04 per cent, and 2.57 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, on Monday, December 21 Maharashtra government had declared a night curfew in municipal corporation areas as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of contagious disease. As per the state government directives, the curfew will remain in effect between 11 pm to 6 am till January 5 in the financial capital. Government has also requested all the citizens to stay home during New Year's Eve and not to venture out as a precaution against the disease. It has asked people not to assemble in large number at public places like seashores, parks including crowded places such as Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty and Juhu Chowpatty. 

Senior Citizens and children below 10 years of age have been asked to stay home for health and security reasons. The advisory has also asked people not to visit religious places on January 1 to avoid the crowd and maintain social distancing. Furthermore, it has also asked people to wear a face mask, use hand sanitisers and not to burst firecrackers on the New Year's Eve to prevent air pollution.

Mumbai reported 557 new COVID-19 cases, 720 recoveries and 12 deaths on Monday, December 28, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,91,471. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 8,178 active cases and 2,71,348 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,088 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 23,11,503 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 280 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 2,475 buildings are sealed by the BMC.
