Keeping in mind the rise in coronavirus cases in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday has made 100 per cent attendance for all its employees in offices and on-field compulsory. While BMC employees over 55 years of age and people with medical conditions have received some relaxations, they also have been asked to work.

In the fight against coronavirus, the BMC will require all hands on deck and therefore, the civic body has mandated 100 per cent attendance for all its employees. With the public transport being shut as of now, the BMC has asked all its staff living outside BMC limits, like Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira Bhayander or Palghar etc., to contact the nearest Ward office of BMC. The BMC in its order asked the employees to provide their services to the nearest ward office from their residence, instead of their original current posting.

Since the elderly people are more vulnerable to COVID-19, the BMC in its order has asked all staff over the age of 55 years to either work from home or work in the office and not go on the field. The civic body has asked people in the medical department, including doctors, nursing staff and paramedics over the age of 55 years with co-morbidities to stay home for 2 weeks.

With 417 new cases on Thursday, Mumbai remains the worst-affected city in the country. As of May 1, Mumbai has recorded 7,061 cases and 290 deaths due to COVID-19. As of April 30, 2020, COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra hit the 10,000-mark with 10,498 with 459 deaths. Update as of April 28, 2020, states that the BMC has sealed a total of 1391 buildings thereby increasing the list of containment zones in Mumbai, out of which 782 were located in the congested areas.
