Owing to the rise in the number of cases in Mumbra, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Tuesday ordered a complete lockdown in the area May 27 onwards. Therefore, only milk and medical shops are being allowed to remain open. Mumbra has reported 298 Covid-19 cases so far.

A circular issued by the civic body said, “There has been a substantial increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Mumbra. In spite of the lockdown, people are crowding at shops and vegetable markets. Social distancing norms are not being followed.”

The civic body has directed that no shop, barring milk and medical stores, will be allowed to remain open. The milk shops too have only been allowed to remain open from 7:00 am to 9:00 am whereas the medical stores can only remain open after adhering to social distancing norms.

Individuals have been strictly asked to stay at home and no individual will be allowed to venture except in case of extreme emergencies.

To ensure that the total shutdown is followed properly, the Thane Municipal Corporation has set up a patrolling unit. All the major junctions in the area have been barricaded and the municipal corporation has asked for extra police deployment in Mumbra.

The civic body is making arrangements to ensure that home delivery of meat, fish and vegetables is made possible in the area. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Maneesh Joshi told The Indian Express that the shutdown will last for two-three days and only if the number of cases goes down, then the lockdown will be relaxed.
