COVID-19 cases in Mumbai rose almost three times in this week between Monday, April 11 (26) and Wednesday, April 13.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) daily tally has been oscillating between 54 and 18 since March 11, except for March 17 when 73 cases were detected.

However, the record of zero deaths have been consist for a while now in Mumbai.

The civic body officials said that the numbers are too small to be a cause for worry, but admitted that it could be the result of relaxing the mask mandate earlier this month.

BMC Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said the rising graph could be the result of “opening up”. A small hike was expected in cases in a 15-day period due to the relaxation of rules like before. Though the rise is too minimal to be of significance, Kakani added.

Dr Rahul Pandit, who is a member of the state government's task force on COVID, said the number of cases in Mumbai is very low, so doubling isn't alarming. There is a need to keep an eye on it for the next few days, he further stated.

With this, yesterday’s numbers (73) accounted for almost 60 per cent of the state caseload, which was at 124. Whereas, on Monday, April 11, Maharashtra recorded 41 cases only. Of which, Mumbai reported 26, that is nearly 63 per cent.

Meanwhile, the state toll was one with a death in Sindhudurg.
