CR collects a fine of INR 15 lakhs from 3,000 commuters with fake IDs

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected a fine of over INR 58 crores from people caught flouting the COVID-related norms since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the past two months, the Central Railway (CR) has recovered a fine of INR 2.92 lakhs from 1,500 passengers travelling without masks.

Officials have warned all travellers to compulsorily wear masks and follow all COVID-19 norms while travelling to work and back home.

Meanwhile, a total of 3,000 cases were registered in which fines to the tune of INR 15 lakhs collected in the past one month from unauthorised travel in suburban trains in which commuters were caught with fake ID cards, sources said.

In addition, 28,910 ticketless travellers were caught in April, 32,907 passengers in May and 30,346 till June 24.

A CR spokesperson said that the fines collected in April, May and June were INR 1.04 crores, INR 1.18 crores and INR 1.09 crores respectively.

However, violators on Mumbai suburban local train services — Western Railway (INR 22,63,400), Harbour Railway (INR 6,57,600) and Central Railway (INR 21,18,200) — have coughed up fines worth INR 50,39,200 so far.
