BMC collects over INR 58 crores from citizens flouting COVID-related norms

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected a fine of over INR 58 crores from people caught flouting the COVID-related norms since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the latest update, an amount of INR 58,42,99,600 has been collected inclusive of fines imposed by Mumbai Police and the Railways till June 23.

Of which, the Mumbai Police has collected INR 7,62,74,200 in fines from people who were found without face masks in public places.

Meanwhile, violators on Mumbai suburban local train services — Western Railway (INR 22,63,400), Harbour Railway (INR 6,57,600) and Central Railway (INR 21,18,200) — have coughed up fines worth INR 50,39,200.

The civic body has been appealing to citizens to wear masks while walking or travelling in public places.

Mumbai on Thursday, June 24, reported 789 new cases and 10 fatalities that raised the tally of infections to 7,24,113 and the death toll to 15,348, as per the latest data shared by the BMC. Meanwhile,  Maharashtra, which is bracing itself for a possible third wave, crossed the 60 lakh cases mark on Thursday with 9,844 persons tested positive for COVID-19.
