Maharashtra reports its first death from Delta Plus variant

The Health Minister also clarified that there is no reason to impose new restrictions. But COVID-appropriate behaviour should be followed.

On Friday, June 25, Maharashtra reported the first death due to the Delta Plus variant of coronavirus. The 80-year-old woman, who was a resident of Ratnagiri, had co-morbidities, confirmed the state health minister Rajesh Tope.

According to reports, there are 21 cases of the delta plus variant in Maharashtra. Of these, seven patients are in Jalgaon, nine in Ratnagiri, two in Mumbai, one patient each in Palghar, Thane and Sindhudurgh.

There is no need to panic as it is not that there is a significant number of patients. However, the health department is taking 100 samples from all 36 districts, Tope said.

He also mentioned that they are will be checking the travel history of the patient and if he had taken vaccination or if there is reinfection.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had called a meeting with task force officials to take decisions on the measures to be adopted in the wake Covid plus variant. Reports suggest that the new variant may force Maharashtra to impose severe restrictions in order to keep the surge in check. 

Notably, Delta Plus was declared a 'Variant of Concern' by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
