The BJP corporator has criticized the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for not taking action against the citizens flouting the COVID-appropriate norms.

Even as the city began to unlock, BMC has not picked up its drive to take action against those not wearing a mask in public places.

Slamming the BMC, BJP corporator Vinod Mishra said that there are huge crowds in all markets and many are not wearing masks.

According to reports, on Monday, June 14, the BMC penalised only 4,990 persons and collected INR 9.98 lakhs from them.

Meanwhile, on Day 1 of the partial lockdown, the civic body came across several violators across the city. On Monday, June 7, the BMC marshals fined a total of 3,434 violators and collected INR 6.86 lakhs as a fine.

As per the BMC data, a total of 353 violators were fined and INR 70,600 was collected from F-North (Sion, Wadala) ward, which is the highest, followed by 308 violators and INR 61,600 fine from K-West (Andheri West, Juhu, Versova) ward and 220 violators and fine of INR 44,000 from L ward (Ghatkopar, Vidyavihar).

According to an official, many violators were also being fined inside private and public vehicles who had their mask below their nose level.

Earlier, the BMC was on average collecting INR 13 lakh per day in fines. In addition, officials said that in March around 24,000 people were penalised and over INR 45 lakh collected in fines every day.

Besides, as per the data shared by BMC last month, until May 2021, a sum of INR 54.13 crore has been recovered in the form of a penalty. The same has been deposited in BMC's treasury.
