BMC fines 3,434 violators on Day 1 of Mumbai Unlock

The BMC, in May, had made it mandatory for people to wear two masks. The decision was taken by the BMC officials as an appeal to the citizens who wear plain cotton masks or just a surgical masks.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been making efforts to contain the spread of the infections.

The civic body has been appealing the citizens to follow the COVID-related norms and if violated, officials is taking punitive action against the violators. While many people followed the same diligently, the civic body has come across many violators on the first day of partial unlock across the city.

On Monday, June 7, the BMC marshals fined total of 3,434 violators and collected INR 6.86 lakhs as fine.

As per the BMC data, a total of 353 violators were fined and INR 70,600 was collected from F-North (Sion, Wadala) ward, which is the highest, followed by 308 violators and INR 61,600 fine from K-West (Andheri west, Juhu, Versova) ward and 220 violators and fine of INR 44,000 from L ward (Ghatkopar, Vidyavihar).

According to an official, many violators were also being fined inside private and public vehicles who had their mask below their nose level.

Meanwhile, marshals stated that most of the violators were those who had gone out for their daily errands. Now that public transports are operating in a phased manner, most of these violators are local people.

Earlier last month, the BMC had made it mandatory for people to wear two masks. The decision was taken by the BMC officials as an appeal to the citizens who wear plain cotton masks or just a surgical masks. Reports released by the local administration stated that a fine of INR 54.13 crore was collected till May 2021 from citizens who were found without a mask in Mumbai.
