The Central Railway (CR) has started the extension project of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. The project will begin on Friday night, April 19, and will aim to extend platforms used for long-distance trains to accommodate 24-car trains.

The CSMT station has 18 platforms. Platforms 8 through 18 handle long-distance trains, while platforms 1 through 7 cater to suburban services. However, of the 11 long-distance platforms, only a few can currently handle trains with 24 coaches. The project's goal is the extension of platforms 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 to accommodate trains with up to 24 carriages.

The platform lengths will be increased to the range of 305 to 382 metres. The project also includes the construction of necessary service buildings and yard remodelling. Once completed, these platforms will significantly enhance CSMT's ability to manage longer trains. The project also involves the removal of nine outdated dry pit lines used for train washing, 61 outdated OHE masts, and 71 telecommunication hurdles.

The project will also influence commuters during construction. There will be a block lasting between 24 and 30 hours. It will result in the cancellation of numerous local and long-distance trains between midnight and 4.30 pm. Approximately thirty services on the Main and Harbour lines and six long-distance trains will end at Dadar.

The CR has planned to carry out the work in four-hour blocks over two nights on April 19–20 and April 20–21. The work will start at 12.30 am and conclude at 4.30 am on both days. During this period, train movements will not be permitted on the rail tracks on the Slow and Fast lines between Byculla and Wadala-CSMT sections. This will affect the CSMT-Wadi Bunder route, the Main and Harbour lines, the 7th line, and the shunting neck.
