Passengers travelling by mail and express trains at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will now have to get their bags checked before entering the station. The increased safety measures are in response to a rise in passenger numbers.

Under the new rule, security personnel will inspect all luggage using baggage scanners. After inspection, a unique tag is attached to each bag to mark that it has been cleared. The system is similar to airport security and helps identify which bags have been checked. Luggage stored in the cloakroom is also thoroughly examined.

As per reports, having a valid train ticket is also as important as having luggage scanned. Passengers must make sure that no suspicious or hazardous items are carried, apart from regular clothing. Two baggage scanners have been installed at the main entrances for mail and express trains. Barricades have also been set up at ticket counters, express platforms, and local station entrances. Passengers will only be allowed onto platforms after their bags have been inspected.

Mumbai has been placed on high alert following warnings from intelligence agencies about a possible terror threat. There have been reports of explosives being organised from Maharashtra or Kashmir, reportedly supported by the ISI. Following the warnings, security measures have been strengthened at key locations, including airports.

Mumbai Police and other authorities have increased surveillance in crowded areas. Officers have been told to watch for any suspicious activity. The alert comes nearly two months after a car explosion in Delhi on November 10. The incident involved a moving Hyundai i20 and a suspected suicide bomber, Dr. Umar Un Nabi, leaving 15 people dead and more than 20 injured.
