Cyclone Tauktae: IMD alerts more rains in Mumbai

The “Extremely Severe” Cyclone Tauktae came closest at 145km to the west of Mumbai, which brought such heavy rain over the maximum city in a peak summer month. However, it made landfall in Gujarat Monday evening.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to intense spells of rain in Mumbai city and suburbs over the next few hours on Tuesday in the aftermath of cyclone Tauktae, the city civic body said.

Along with the rain, the city could witness gusty winds with speed reaching up to 80-90 kmph, as per the IMD forecast issued at 7 am.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau forecast light to moderate rain along the Konkan coast – Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Thane districts, while Palghar is very likely to record heavy rain at isolated places on Tuesday, May 18.

However, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated places. The minimum temperature is forecast to be below normal in the city at 25 degrees Celsius.

In addition, IMD’s Mumbai centre, the Santacruz observatory (representative of suburbs) recorded 230.3 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday, May 18.

Besides, the Colaba observatory (representative of south Mumbai) recorded 207.6 mm rain during the same period.

In Mumbai, these areas - Mahalakshmi Junction, Hindmata, Nana Chowk, Sakkar Panchayat Chowk Wadala, Dadar TT, SIS College Sion, Bindumadhav Thackeray Junction Worli, Pathte Bapurao Marg Grant Road, Chandan Streets Masjid Bunder Road, Chirabazar, Shankar Bari Lane, 56 Modi Street in Colaba, JJ Road Junction, BDD Chawl, Amritwar Marg Worli, Andheri Subway, Oshiwara Bus Depot, Malad Subway, Lokhandwala Lane Andheri, Malvani Gate no. 6, Yogi nagar in Borivali, Yashwant Nagar in Vakola - were flooded.
