Janmashtami 2023: Nearly 200 Injured During Dahi Handi Celebrations

A day after the Dahi Handi celebrations, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data on Friday morning, September 8, revealed that as many as 195 'Govindas' have suffered injuries while participating in the festivities across the city.

On the occasion of Janmashtami, the Dahi Handi was organised on Thursday, September 7, across Mumbai.

Out of the 195 injured this year, 18 were admitted to hospitals, 177 were treated and discharged. The injury count may increase as more cases come up throughout the day.

The injured revellers were taken to various medical facilities, including KEM Hospital, Sion Hospital, Rajawadi Hospital, ST George Hospital, Nair Hospital, Bombay Hospital and Cooper Hospital.

According to reports, KEM Hospital had hospitalised seven patients by the end of the day. None had life-threatening conditions. Others experienced hip fractures, leg fractures, collarbone fractures, and a minor wrist fracture. At least two of these patients will require surgery.

Rajawadi Hospital admitted two Govindas with hand and leg fractures. JJ Hospital admitted three people. This included a 19-year-old with a brain injury who is currently under assessment.

Despite the high number of injuries, there has been a slight decrease compared to previous years. Last year, 111 people were injured, and the number rose to 222 the following day.

Shatabdi Hospital: 3 injured (1 undergoing treatment, 2 discharged)

Bandra Bhabha Hospital: 3 injured (1 admitted, 2 discharged)

VN Desai Hospital: 4 injured (discharged)

Cooper Hospital: 6 injured (2 admitted, 4 discharged)

Trauma Care Hospital – 4 injured (discharged)

BDBA Hospital- 9 injured (1 admitted, 8 discharged)
