In an initiative to provide shelters to elderly, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is building an old age home in Goregaon East. Along with this, the civic body department has also decided to set up a day care center for senior citizens.

One such center will be opened in the western suburbs. If it gets a good response, such centers will be opened at other places too.

There was a provision for old age homes in the Draft Development Plan 2014-2034 of Mumbai. While the idea of day care center came after receiving demand from the citizens. As per the proposal of the planning department, the care center will be a place where senior citizens can spend some time, sleep, eat and will also have facilities that will refresh their mind.

The centers will be set up at places of civic convenience and will be run by NGOs. They will have to provide various facilities to these citizens and run the activities of the center. If there is a good response from senior citizens, the BMC is planning to start one such center each in all the 24 administrative wards across the city.

BMC will have to find available places in the wards to set up the care centres. A decision will be taken to increase the number of centers after a review for 6 months.
