Deputy CM Pawar Says COVID-19 Welfare Schemes Should Be Expedited for the Poor

Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar said on Monday that the welfare schemes announced by the state for the economically weaker sections of the population ought to be implemented efficiently. The welfare programs were announced by the state to help the poor affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“The poor and the socially backward should get the benefits of welfare schemes, and must not be subjected to financial hardships during the lockdown,” Pawar was quoted as saying.

Pawar reviewed the newly announced schemes, adding that the ₹5,476 crore welfare package announced by the Chief Minister should reach the target population as early as possible. The Deputy CM went on to say that the Finance Department has made the necessary allocations for the fund.

As per the details of the food security scheme, around seven crore people will benefit from it. The overall cost of this scheme is ₹90 crores and consists of offering three kilograms (kg) of wheat along with two kg of rice to each family. Further, around two lakh free meals (shivbhojan thalis) will be distributed free of cost to those in need at a cost of ₹75 crores.

Nearly 35 lakh beneficiaries will also receive an advance financial assistance of ₹1,000 via the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojna, Shravanbal, and Indira Gandhi Oldage Retired Pension schemes. 

The state government has allowed district officials to use at least 30 per cent of the amount set aside in the district budget plan for COVID-19 mitigation measures.
