Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde launched a new waste management system in Dombivli on Sunday, May 18, at an event in Savalaram Maharaj Sports Complex Grounds in Dombivli East.

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has decided to follow the “Chennai Pattern” for this system. This is the first project in Maharashtra to use this model. Chennai has been praised across the country for its garbage-free efforts.

Under the new plan, KDMC has:

- hired 1,200 workers to clean the city.

- introduced 350 vehicles to collect and transport garbage.

- selected companies with a good track record for this project.

The waste collection will take place in Wards D, E, F, G, H, I, and J. These efforts will be handled by KDMC’s Solid Waste Management Department. The plan includes road cleaning, garbage collection, and other cleanliness tasks.

To monitor the work, KDMC will set up 247 control centres. A 24-hour control room will also be started to listen to public complaints. Special teams will be formed to handle issues quickly. Battery-powered trucks will be used for primary collection. Charging stations will be set up for them.

Five “Waste to Wealth” centres will also be started. Thirty percent of roads in the city will be kept completely free of garbage. A separate system will handle green waste, dead animals, and harmful household waste. Hook-loader trucks will clear spots like chawls and road corners where trash collects often.

A new auto workshop will be built to maintain the garbage trucks. A team will go door to door in slum areas to collect garbage. There will also be an emergency response team. A public awareness group will visit areas every day to spread information.

A company has been hired to carry out the waste collection. Earlier, companies were paid by the weight of garbage they picked. Now, they will be paid only if they meet 45 performance standards set by KDMC. If they fail to meet the goals, penalties will be given.

The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Pratap Shinde, MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde, MLA Rajesh More, and MLA Sulbha Gaikwad.
