The number of coronavirus cases have decreased across some slums in Mumbai, but officials are now worried about the increasing cases in areas, like Borivali, Kandivali and some more localities nearby in North Mumbai.

Observing this, a few days ago, BMC officials and the police decided to impose a complete lockdown in parts of Malad, Borivali, Kandivali and Dahisar. This decision was taken to ensure that officials contain the spread of the virus, in a stringent manner.

Keeping the same in mind, officials, on June 22, 2020, started door-to-door screening in some of these areas. Authorities will visit the high-risk zones and screen patients across some slums and chawls in Borivali and Kandivali. This will help them identify people who are prone to the risk of coronavirus.

A few days back PTI reported that the officials requested the entire area to be sealed, however, BMC realised that this was not feasible, and hence some selected areas were closed.

As of June 13, 2020, this locality had 2,664 cases and as of June 19, 2020, the cases increased to 3,488. Further, reports also state that 70 per cent of the cases in these areas were not from slums, but from high-rise buildings and to ensure safety, local authorities were imposing strict guidelines and norms.

The doubling rate of cases is also high in some of these wards. While Mumbai has a doubling rate of 34 days, Borivali had a doubling rate of 18 days and Dahisar at 16 days. Besides this Mumbai police, have also observed people flouting social distancing norms not by not wearing masks, not maintaining social distancing and also keeping the shops open beyond 7 pm.

As of June 22, 2020, Maharashtra had a total of 1,32,075 cases, out of which Mumbai alone had 66,488 cases. The tally in Thane has crossed the 10,000-mark and Navi Mumbai has 5,786 cases. Besides this, 6,170 deaths have been registered and 65,744 patients have been discharged.
