In a major development, police commissioner Sanjay Pandey hit the ground running by starting a major crackdown against wrong-way driving, a menace which many citizens have been complaining about since long.

According to latest reports, the Mumbai traffic department registered a total of 107 FIRs for wrong-side driving in the past two days, on Monday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 8. In addition, the city traffic police issued challans for over 14,000 other violations.

In a major crackdown against wrong-way driving, a menace which many citizens have been complaining about since long, Mumbai traffic police started a special drive on Monday, March 7 under the guidance of newly-appointed police commissioner Sanjay Pandey.

This development came just a couple of days after the new police commissioner of Mumbai commenced the office and took to Facebook to talk about his plans regarding the city’s safety.

Probably, this is the first time the traffic department was coming down strongly against wrong-side driving, said a motorist, and urged that the drive should not fizzle out.

Meanwhile, during the drive, traffic police also towed 413 vehicles abandoned on the roads across the city. Of which, at least 226 vehicles towed away on Monday, March 7.

Bifurcating further, the police officials arrested 35 people for driving on the wrong side of the road. Besides, FIR registered against 6,401 traffic violators.

The traffic police also penalised 564 drivers for driving on one-way streets.

Moreover, it has come to light that most of these offenders were found in the South and West regions of Mumbai. Trombay recorded the maximum number of one-way driving offences with 55 cases, followed by Kalbadevi at 44.

Additionally, police also fined 2,864 bikers for riding without helmets and 658 for driving four-wheelers without seatbelts. 2,047 more violators were charged for illegal and parking in no parking areas.

Earlier, the newly-appointed top cop Sanjay Pandey had announced that wrong side driving will not attract fines, but violators will be directly booked for rash driving under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for rash driving as they not only pose a threat to themselves, but also to pedestrians and other motorists. Such offenders will not only be booked and arrested, but they will also be produced before the court and their vehicle will be impounded. He had further asked citizens to not flout traffic rules.
