As the coronavirus outbreak continues, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has witnessed a drop in its revenue for carrying out the repairing and construction work on bridges across Mumbai.

The civic body had decided to carry out the repair and reconstruct work of 56 bridges from October. It had awarded the contracts for the same before the beginning of monsoon season in May. However, due to the drop in its finances, the BMC has caught up with repair and construction work of 28 bridges across the city.

The bridge department of BMC informed that the repair works on 17 bridges were scheduled to start in the city from October, 18 in western suburbs and 21 in the eastern suburbs. However, of the works on 56 bridges, the repair work would start on nine bridges in the city followed by one in western suburb and 18 in eastern suburbs.

The BMC will take up the repair and reconstruction work of bridges as per the priority. A senior official from the bridges department has informed that the financial condition of BMC has not improved and it will try to finish work on 28 bridges. Meanwhile, the work on the remaining bridges will be carried out depending on the situation.

The civic body will take up works on Charni Road, Lalbaug Flyover, Lokmanya Tilak Road flyover in Dadar, Hancock Bridge, Sion-Bandra Link Road. The official further informed that the repair and reconstruction work on the Himalaya bridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will start after the civic body invites tenders.

Earlier, the BMC had decided to finish the ongoing road repair works and dropped the additional work due to the financial dip the civic body has witnessed in its revenues. The civic body has already reduced ₹400 crores from its budget allocation of ₹2,699 for the year 2020-21.
