To increase transparency and fairness in railway ticket booking, Western Railway (WR) is testing a new method. The initiative will involve installing a dual-display information panel outside the ticket booths.

Whenever a passenger buys a long-distance train ticket, the details of the trip and the total cost will be displayed on this screen. This panel is currently under testing. The screen will be a large 32-36-inch TV set. It will be connected to the computerised ticket window system.

The screen will display various information in a bilingual format. It will include the names of the passengers, the departure and destination stations, and the total fare. This dual-display screen allows passengers to see everything that the ticket booking window staff do in the system.

According to reports, WR is currently determining the appropriate font size, informational layout, and additional system characteristics for the display. The aim is to make the display more animated and interactive, with the total ticket amount displayed in a large font for clear visibility.

The tender has already been awarded by the WR authority. A section of the screen will also be dedicated to advertisements and information. This move is particularly aimed at protecting labourers and migrant workers who unknowingly pay more at ticket counters.

There have been past accusations of ticket counter staff charging more than the actual rate. Then, they pocket the difference. Passenger associations support this new approach. They believe it will reduce instances where customers, especially those travelling in General Class and Sleeper Class, are tricked into paying more.
