Coronavirus Pandemic: Vegetable retailers sell vegetables inside residential complexes

The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra as well as the country keeps increasing with each passing day. In order to curb the spread of the virus, PM Narendra Modi had announced a 21-day lockdown till April 14. With a national lockdown being imposed, people had started panic-shopping. After which, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had appealed to the people to not panic and had assured that despite the lockdown, essentials will be made available to the people.

One of the issues caused due to the lockdown is overcrowded markets. While the lockdown was imposed across the country to avoid overcrowding on streets, the markets painted a different picture. However, in order to ensure that social distancing is maintained during grocery shopping, the vegetable retailers in Mumbai have started going inside residential complexes to sell vegetables.

The move by the retailers has ensured that the markets remain decongested and people are able to maintain social distancing as well.

One such incident was witnessed in a residential society in Charkop where a small market was set up by retailers. Notably, the retailers did not increase the prices of the vegetables while selling them in a residential society.

The authorities also have been taking measures to avoid congestion in major markets across the state. It was earlier planned that the APMC market will be temporarily moved near Central Park in Kharghar. The decision came after it was noticed on Saturday, that a huge crowd had gathered around the market to stock up vegetable.

The vegetable market situated on Senapati Bapat Marg in Dadar was also "partially closed" by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The market was closed by BMC from Saturday and the vendors have been shifted to other places in the city.
