
A massive fire broke out at the Gaondevi vegetable market on Gokhale Road in Naupada, Thane, in the early hours of May 21, 2026. The blaze reportedly started around 3:30–3:45 am and quickly spread through the crowded two-storey market complex, destroying nearly 155 shops and stalls. Preliminary reports suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the fire.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister expressed grief over the loss of lives in the massive fire that broke out at the Gaondevi Market in Thane on May 21, 2026.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of firefighter Sagar Shinde and security guard Kalu Gadekar during rescue operations at the crowded vegetable market in Naupada near Thane railway station. Over 150 shops were reportedly destroyed in the blaze.
After visiting the fire-hit site and meeting the injured personnel at the hospital, Shinde described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and assured full support to the victims’ families and affected traders. He also directed authorities to conduct electrical and structural audits of civic-run markets across Thane to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The government has assured assistance to affected traders, and the civic body plans to restore and rehabilitate the market area at the earliest.
The Thane Municipal Corporation later announced INR 10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and INR 1 lakh assistance for the injured.
