In a significant development, Mumbai is all set to receive electric water taxis in December with the boats operating between the Gateway of India in South Mumbai and Belapur in Navi Mumbai route.

The 24-seater water taxi will be primarily utilised on the route between Gateway of India in South Mumbai and Belapur in Navi Mumbai.

Infinity Harbour Service, a private water taxi operator, assigned to operate services on this route has purchased four such boats. Each amounting to INR 2.5 crore approximately.

These electric water taxis can speed up to 12 nautical miles and can complete the journey between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai in an hour.

The electric water taxi can run four hours continuously on one time charging. Whereas the existing diesel water taxis in operation consume 140 litres per hour.

Presently, Infinity Harbour Service is operating water taxi services between Belapur and Elephanta Caves and in Mandwa Alibaug.

The response on these routes has been moderate, particularly on weekends, with approximately three trips made, each carrying 15-20 passengers, according to the operator.

According to reports, two 24-seater electric water taxis are presently undergoing trial runs in Goa while two six-seater water taxis are undergoing trials in Kochi.
