With effect from April 1, Mumbai residents will be charged a steep increase in electricity tariffs. This hike is set to inflate power bills, especially during the summer months. Tata Power customers will have hikes of between 44 and 59%, whereas Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) will see a hike of 5.7%.

For MSEDCL customers, the tariff hike varies based on consumption. Those using up to 100 units monthly will see an increase of 30 paise per unit. The hike increases for higher consumption brackets, with 65 paisa for units 101 to 300, 94 paisa for units 301 to 500, and 107 paisa per unit for users consuming more electricity than 500 units per month.

Tata Power has the biggest hike for those who live in Mumbai suburbs. The increase ranges from an additional INR 1.99 per unit for those using up to 100 units monthly to INR 5.67 per unit for usage beyond 500 units. Those using 101 to 300 units would pay an additional INR 2.69 per unit. The increase would be INR 5.33 for 301 to 500 units. Those who use more than 500 units of electricity per month will pay INR 5.67 more per unit than they did the previous year.

There is no relief for the BEST household power users. BEST power users also face a tariff hike, with an additional 15 paisa per unit for usage up to 100 units each month and up to INR 1.10 per unit for usage beyond 500 units.

Additionally, MMRDA has also decided to replace Tata Power for Monorail and Metro Corridors 2A and 7. The fee for the monorail metro lines was INR 4.92 per unit under the previous tariff schedule for 2023–2024; however, the revised tariff schedule for 2024–2025 suggests a rate of INR 7.37 per unit. This is a hike of INR 2.45 per unit. Additionally, Tata Power increased the fixed fees from INR 375 to INR 400.

The least impact is on Adani Energy Mumbai Ltd.'s customers. Their users will see the least increase in their tariffs. The hike starts from an additional 9 paisa per unit for usage up to 100 units, to 4 paisa per unit for 301 to 500 units.

Adani residential customers will only pay an additional 9 paisa per unit if they use up to 100 units per month. The monthly hike for 101 to 300 units of power use will be 24 paise and 4 paise per unit for the usage of 301 to 500 units.

Despite the hikes, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has approved the new tariff structure.
