The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) monorail and metro projects will soon be powered by Adani Electricity. Currently Tata Power is supplying electricity for Monorail, Metro. But Tata Power has hiked the electricity tariff. Therefore, MMRDA has decided to change the electricity supplier.

Tata Power is currently the electricity supplier for Chembur to Jacob Circle Monorail line and Metro 2A (Dahisar to Andheri West) along with Metro 7 (Dahisar to Gundvali). Tata Power currently charges INR 4.92 per unit for Monorail and Metro for 2023-24. However, due to Tata's hike in electricity tariff from Monday, monorail and metro will be charged at INR 7.37 per unit for 2024-25. Hence, MMRDA has decided to buy electricity from Adani instead of Tata Power. It is understood that the process for that has also been started. MMRDA will have to pay a rate of INR 6.15 per unit if electricity is taken from Adani. Overall, MMRDA has decided to switch electricity suppliers as Adani's electricity will be available somewhat cheaper.

Metro 2A and Line 8 require 12 to 15 MW of electricity per day. Whereas 2 to 3 megawatts of electricity is used per day for monorail. Meanwhile, the monorail project is running at a loss and the MMRDA is not getting the expected revenue from the metro either. In such a case, there is a fear that the loss will increase further if the burden of electricity tariff increases. Hence, electricity will be taken from Adani instead of Tata.
