Cyclone Tauktae: MSEDCL restores power supply for over 34 lakh customers in Maharashtra

As per reports, Cyclone Taunte which hit Maharashtra between May 15 and 18, 2021, affected more than 10,000 villages in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigad, Thane, Palghar, Kolhapur, Pune and other districts of the state.

The torrential rains and strong winds caused by Cyclone Tauktae damaged power supply across 10,752 villages in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigad, Thane, Palghar, Kolhapur, Pune and other districts of the state. As a result, the work of restoring the power supply in the disconnected areas has been undertaken in full swing. Till the evening of Tuesday, May 19, 2021, MSEDCL has succeeded in restoring the power supply in 6,040 villages.

Moreover, approximately over 5500 electricity poles fell in Maharashtra, whereby wires were broken and feeder trips were reported due to strong winds and torrential rains. Reports state that MSEDCL officials, employees and technicians are trying to restore the power supply in several districts.

Besides this, a total of 1,546 high-pressure poles fell in the state due to the storm. Out of which 425 have been corrected. Further, a total of 3940 low-pressure poles fell in the state due to the storm, of which, 974 have been corrected. MSEDCL officials and employees have been working tirelessly to restore the power supply and the department has deployed 13,000 technicians for the same.

Data reveals that more than 46 lakh residents in Maharashtra have been affected due to the disruption and power supply concerns. So far, the power supply for more than 34 lakh residents has been restored.

Thane was one of the most affected districts and the power supply was disrupted for more than 7.8 lakh consumers, of which, until the evening of Tuesday, May 19, officials restored the for approximately 5.5 lakh customers. More than 7.7 lakh consumers were affected in Raigad, and so far, over 5.1 lakh residents have received the power supply once again. In Palghar district, the power supply for over 5.8 lakh consumers was cut off. Out of this, supply has been restored for more than 2.4 lakh customers. Meanwhile, in Ratnagiri district, power supply for more than 5.4 lakh customers was cut off, out of which power supply has been restored for over  4.1 lakh customers.

In Sindhudurg district, the power supply for 3.66 lakh customers was cut off, but it has been restored for 67,000 customers. More than 3.29 lakh customers were affected in Nashik, of which more than 2.7 lakh customers have got the power supply. Similarly, in Kolhapur district, the power supply for 2.96 lakh houses was cut off, out of which more than 2.49 lakh has been restored. In Satara district, power supply of more than 4.36 lakh was cut off, and so far 4.8 lakh has been restored. 

Pune reported disruption in 1.66 lakh establishments, while the same has been restored in over 1.47 lakh establishments. 

More than 1.55 lakh customers were affected in Sangli, over 53000 in Vidharbha, and 1.5 lakh in Marathwada. However, officials have been able to restore power for 1.5 lakh customers in Sangli, over 50,000 in Vidharbha and more than 1.3 lakh in Marathwada.
